Former ambassador and Number 10 policy advisor Tom Fletcher talks about his debut novel, The Ambassador, a 21st-century thriller written by a man with a unique insight into modern diplomacy.

In the aftermath of a global pandemic, a beautiful and charismatic human rights activist is murdered, live on the internet, at the British Embassy in Paris. It is a mystery that no one wants solved. But Ambassador Ed Barnes is determined to find out the truth.

‘A gripping thriller from the man on the inside. You need to read this.’ Andy McNab

‘Tom Fletcher was the ultimate Downing Street operator’ David Cameron

Fletcher is principal of Hertford College. He was a policy advisor to Blair, Brown and Cameron before a spell as British Ambassador to Lebanon in 2011-15. He has led reviews on the future of the Foreign Office and the future of the UN. Here he talks to crime fiction novelist and critic Peter Guttridge, author of 18 novels and a regular interviewer at literary festivals including Oxford.

This event is part of the festival’s crime fiction programme.
