Award-winning novelist Alison Moore talks about her new novel, The Retreat, a story about suffering artists and the pursuit of dreams.
Sandra peters has been fascinated by the private island of Lieloh since childhood. It is home to a reclusive silent film star Valerie Swanson. Sandra is a receptionist but still harbours dreams of being an artist. When she sees an advert for a two-week artists’ retreat on the island she sets off on what could become a life-changing journey.
‘She is both gifted stylist and talented creator of a new English grotesque’ Isabel Berwick, Financial Times
Moore’s first novel, The Lighthouse, won the McKitterick Prize and was shortlisted for the Booker Prize. She is also author of He Wants and Death and the Seaside, and of a series of books for children. Here she talks to writer and literary critic Sophie Ratcliffe, author of The Lost Properties of Love.
