Paul Quarrie Introduced by Henry Woudhuysen

Librarian Paul Quarrie talks about his more than 50 years of work with rare books and manuscripts at places such as Eton College and Sotheby’s.

Quarrie reflects on some of the more extraordinary discoveries he has made in his career and explores different aspects of the rare book world linking Galen, Copernicus, Montaigne,  Isaac Newton, and James Joyce, whose Ulysses celebrates its centenary this year.

Quarrie’s lifetime passion has been the exploration of manuscripts, printed books and libraries. He has worked in historic libraries at Eton, at Winchester College, and the Pierpont Morgan Library in New York. He has also worked at Sotheby’s in London and Paris. He still works part-time today at Maggs Bros Ltd, one of the world’s largest antiquarian booksellers. Quarrie has catalogued materials ranging from the Gutenberg Bible to the books of William Morris and Burne-Jones. He has edited for Everyman Pocket Poets two volumes of English translations, Horace and Greek Poets of Antiquity.

He will be introduced by the Rector of Lincoln College, Professor Henry Woudhuysen.
