1 hour

Sheldonian Theatre

Two-time European Cup-winning footballer and one of the most successful club and international managers of his generation Martin O’Neill talks about his new memoir On Days Like These.

O’Neill’s story takes in a playing career that began in Northern Ireland before he joined Brian Clough’s Nottingham Forest and went on to win a First Division championship, two League Cups and back-to-back European Cups. He was the most successful manager in Wycombe Wanderers history, taking them out of non-league football and up the Football league ladder. He then went on to win seven trophies as Celtic manager, including three Premier Leagues, and two League Cups as Leicester City manager. He led Aston Villa to six consecutive Premier league top-six finishes and the Republic of Ireland to the 2016 Euros, where they reached the second round for the first time in their history.

O’Neill talks about the highs and lows of his footballing years, being harangued by fans, the boardroom dramas, relegation scraps, the characters, and being fired.

‘Every word of it is his . . . full of vim. Not to mention tales of conflict’ The Daily Telegraph

Here he talks to former LBC radio host and BBC presenter Matthew Stadlen.
