Writing in the Shadow of Morse

Simon Mason and Cara Hunter Chaired by Peter Guttridge

Saturday, 25 March 2023

10:00am

1 hour

Weston Lecture Theatre

£7 - £12.50

Oxford writers Simon Mason and Cara Hunter discuss their approach to writing about one of the capitals of crime fiction, the city of dreaming spires, high tables and low morals.

Mason’s A Killing in November was the first book in a series featuring DIs Wilkins and Wilkins (no relation) and was followed by A Broken Afternoon. He is also author of The Rough Guide to Classic Novels, for which he chose, read and wrote pieces on 200 classic novels from all world traditions, from the time of Don Quixote to the present day. Mason is a former managing director of David Fickling Books, where he worked with Philip Pullman and edited his essays, Daemon Voices.

Hunter is author of bestselling crime novels featuring DI Adam Fawley and his Oxford-based police team. Her books have sold over a million copies in the UK alone and been translated into 27 languages so. Her third novel, No Way Out, was selected by the Sunday Times as one of the 100 best crime novels since 1945. The television rights to the series have been acquired by the Fremantle group.

Discussions are chaired by crime fiction novelist and critic Peter Guttridge, author of 18 novels and a regular interviewer at literary festivals including Oxford.

This event is part of the festival’s crime fiction programme.
