Journalist and broadcaster Samira Ahmed explains how the Beatles’ first film, A Hard Day’s Night, changed the band and pop music’s relationship with the screen and became an enduring classic.
Ahmed says the black-and-white film shot in a documentary style captured Britain at a moment of social transformation. Its portrayal of celebrity, friendship and media frenzy still resonates today. Ahmed draws on her own experiences of discovering the film as a child and on her experiences of working in television. She highlights the craft behind the making of the film, provides insight from those who took part and analyses the role of women in it.
Ahmed is a BBC broadcaster. She presents Front Row on Radio 4, Newswatch on BBC News and is a regular host of radio documentaries. She was named British Broadcasting Press Guild’s Audio Presenter of the Year 2020.
