Philosopher and psychotherapist Dr Mark Vernon talks about his new look at the life of William Blake and argues that the visionary artist, writer and poet can speak to us in challenging times.

Vernon says Blake lived in a tumultuous era of war, discontent, rapid technological change and human estrangement from nature, not dissimilar to the age we live in now. He exposed the dark sides of political fervour and social moralising while celebrating love and liberty. Blake conversed with prophets and angels and was unconventionally religious. Vernon says that if we take Blake seriously then he can help us to unlock the transformative power of imagination.

Vernon is a psychotherapist, writer and former Anglican priest and has a PhD in philosophy. He has previously written books on Dante, Plato and Christianity.
