Former president of the Supreme Court Lady Brenda Hale explains the complex web of laws in the United Kingdon and demonstrates that, while they may appear intimidating, they are on our side.
Hale uses true stories from every part of the justice system to explain how they cover decisions about everything from the mundane to the dramatic and extraordinary. Hale says we all have rights, whether we are schoolchildren, disabled people, workers, minorities or parents. She shows how the law works and tells us why we should care about it.
Hale was called to the bar in 1969. In 1984, she became the first woman and the youngest person to be appointed to the Law Commission. She became a full-time judge in 1994 and was president of the Supreme Court between 2017 and 2020 when it unanimously found that Boris Johnson’s prorogation of Parliament was unlawful. Hale is author of a memoir, Spider Woman. Here she talks to Justice David Unterhalter, a judge in the Supreme Court of Appeal of South Africa.
