Former Archbishop of Galilee in the Melkite Greek Catholic Church Elias Chacour talks about his life and his many decades of work to build peace between Palestinians and Jews.

Chacour grew up in a small Palestinian village in Galilee. His personal quest began when tens of thousands of Palestinians were killed and nearly one million forced into refugee camps in 1948. He has used historical and biblical research to uncover a little-known side to the Arab-Israeli conflict. Chacour looks at questions such as what caused the turmoil in the Middle East? what does biblical prophecy really say about these people and this place? and can bitter enemies ever be reconciled?
Chacour has built libraries, community centres and youth clubs across Israel’s Galilee region to try to bring reconciliation between Palestinians and Jews. He founded a school – Mars Elias Educational Institutions – where over 3000 students, Christians, Jews, Muslims and Druze, study side by side as one community.

He has been nominated for a Nobel Peace Prize three times. He was Archbishop of Akko, Haifa, Nazareth and All Galilee of the Melkite Greek Catholic Church from 2006 to 2014. He has received many honours including the World Methodist Peace Award, the Chevalier de la Legion d’Honneur, the Peacemakers in Action Award from the Tanenbaum Center for Interreligious Understanding, and the Niwano Peace Prize in Japan. Here he talks to Professor Sir Diarmaid MacCulloch, emeritus professor of the history of the Church at the University of Oxford, known for his work, A History of Christianity. The event will be introduced by the Dean of Lichfield Cathedral, the Very Revd Adrian Dorber.
