The Great Post Office Scandal

Nick Wallis Interviewed by Nick Higham

Friday, 31 March 2023

6:00pm

1 hour

Oxford Martin School: Lecture Theatre

£7 - £12.50

Journalist and broadcaster Nick Wallis talks about his work to expose the Post Office Horizon scandal that led to a ten-part series for BBC radio, BBC Panorama documentaries and a Private Eye special.

More than 700 people were prosecuted by the Post Office for fraud, theft and false accounting between 2000 and 2015. Prosecutions were based on the Post Office’s deeply flawed Horizon software. Wallis has been working on the story since 2010 when a taxi driver told him his pregnant wife had been sent to prison for a crime she did not commit. He explains how innocent people fought back to clear their names in the face of institutional arrogance and obfuscation. And he looks at the impact one of the biggest miscarriages of justice in legal history had on the many victims who were pillars of their community.

Wallis is a freelance journalist and broadcaster who has worked with the BBC, Private Eye and ITN. He is currently acting as series consultant for an ITN dramatisation of the scandal to be broadcast in 2023. Here he talks to BBC journalist Nick Higham, who was the BBC’s first media correspondent and is a former presenter of Meet the Author on the BBC news channel.

This event is part of a series on the uncovering of public scandals and on campaigns against injustice.
