2:00pm

1 hour

Sheldonian Theatre

£7 - £12.50

Well-known stand-up comedian and television personality Al Murray talks about his love of military history and the Second World War expressed in his first history book.

Murray, best-known for his character the Pub Landlord, has also made award-winning television shows on military history and has seen huge success hosting a podcast with fellow bestselling military historian James Holland, We Have Ways of Making You Talk. Command sees Murray analysing key military leaders of the Second World War, including some of the lesser-known officers. Through them, he tells how the allies rebounded from early defeats at Dunkirk and Pearl Harbour to victories at El Alamein and the D-Day invasion.

Command is everything popular history should be: authoritative, full of deep wisdom and knowledge, genuinely fresh and original in approach and content, and both compelling and entertainingly written.’ James Holland

Murray has sold out large arenas nationwide on his stand-up tours and is a winner of the British Comedy Award and the Perrier Award. His television history work includes Al Murray’s Road to Berlin on the Discovery Channel and Why Do the Brits Win Every War? For Sky History. He read modern history at Oxford. Here he talks to Professor Ashley Jackson, professor of imperial and military history at King’s College London.
