The Truth Will Set You Free: Memoirs Continued

George Carey Interviewed by Angela Tilby

Thursday, 31 March 2022

2:00pm

1 hour

Weston Lecture Theatre

£7 - £12.50

Former Archbishop of Canterbury Lord George Carey looks back on his ministry and his retirement.

Carey reflects on leadership, education, development, mission and public service in Parliament. He talks honestly about how in his 80s he was embroiled in the Peter Ball scandal and addresses the Church of England’s failure to deal properly with historical clerical abuse.  He charges the contemporary church with making significant errors of its own in its attempts to atone for the past. And he argues that the Christian faith can survive all challenges with the transforming power of Christ.

Carey was Archbishop of Canterbury from 1991 to 2002. He holds a doctorate from the University of Durham and, before becoming Archbishop, taught at three Anglican theological colleges.
Here he talks to Rev Angela Tilby, a canon of Christ Church Oxford and a former senior BBC producer in the religious department.

This event is part of the festival’s programme on Christian tradition.
