Novelist Diana Janney talks about her latest novel, A Man of Understanding, a story interlaced with philosophy, poetry and love about the search for a higher understanding for the self and others. Janney explains why she includes poetry in her novels and what it brings to them and the reader.

Blue’s parents have died, and he finds himself living in a Finca in the mountains of Mallorca with a grandfather, Horatio Hennessy, he has never met before. Horatio has a deep grasp of philosophy and poetry, and a bond gradually evolves over a shared love of poetry and philosophy. But when secrets are uncovered, will understanding turn to misunderstanding and shatter both souls?

Janney is a former model and former barrister who turned to writing. She studied philosophy and the subject runs through her novels, which also include The Infinite Wisdom of Harriet Rose and The Choice. A Man of Understanding was runner-up in The People’s Book Prize.
