Biologist and ornithologist Professor Tim Birkhead tells the story of The Great Auk, the first of the world’s seabirds destroyed by human actions.
The Great Auk was a goose-size bird adapted for underwater flight. It was hunted to extinction by hungry Europeans who discovered its New World breeding colonies. The last two were killed in 1844 but collectors still obsessed over their skins, eggs and skeletons. Birkhead explains how he found himself the recipient of the archive of a man who had collected the largest archive of Great Auk skins and eggs. And he uncovers the life of The Great Auk before humanity and the quest for its remains after 1844.
Birkhead is emeritus professor of behaviour and evolution at the University of Sheffield, particularly known for his work on the mating systems of birds and the history of ornithology. His previous books include The Wisdom of Birds, Bird Sense, The Most Perfect Thing and The Wonderful Mr Willughby.
