Travel writer and historian Barnaby Rogerson looks back at the reasons for the 1,400-year divide between Sunni and Shia and how it has shaped and continues to shape the Middle East.

Rogerson explains how the schism has its origins in the accidental coup after the death of the prophet Muhammad that set aside the claims of Ali ibn Abi Talib and in the slaughter of Ali’s son Husayn at Kerbala. He follows the consequences through the first caliphates and medieval empires forged by Arabs, Persians and Turks. Rogerson says the complex dynamics were jolted by three revolutions in 1979, in Iran, Mecca and Afghanistan.

Rogerson has travelled the Middle East for 40 years as a guide writer, journalist and a writer of histories. He is publisher of the Eland Books travel list, and his books include The Prophet Muhammad: a Biography, The Heirs of the Prophet Muhammad and The Last Crusaders.
