Writer and art critic Martin Gayford brings together the voices of artists past and present in an illustrated talk that throws new light on the painter’s art.

Gayford says it is no surprise that painters talk eloquently about painting, which is a subject that obsesses and engages them more than any other. He draws on interviews with the likes of Frank Auerbach, Gillian Ayres, Georg Baselitz, Frank Bowling, Lucian Freud, David Hockney, Lee Ufan, Paula Rego, Bridget Riley, Jenny Saville, Frank Stella, Hiroshi Sugimoto, Shirazeh Houshiary and Oscar Murillo to throw light on how they work. And he uncovers the thoughts of artists past and present on how their predecessors and their contemporaries worked.

Gayford’s books include Man with a Blue Scarf, Modernists and Mavericks, Shaping the World, Love Lucian: The Letters of Lucian Freud 1939–1954 and Venice: City of Pictures.
