Journalist and historian Luka Jukic attempts to define Central Europe and asks why the idea of a central Europe is such a powerful one.

Poland, Croatia and even Ukraine are proud to align themselves with Central Europe today. However, Jukic says the term originally described a world across Germany and around the Danube formed in the 18th century through the Habsburg dynasty. This world was shattered by two world wars, and it became a Cold War frontier. The 1980s saw the reincarnation of Central Europe as an antidote to Soviet Russia, yet there was little clarity over its identity. Despite this, Jukic says Central Europe seems to feature in every contemporary crisis, from Russian aggression to European disunity.
