Historian and former television executive Alistair Moffatt tells the history of Britain’s North Sea coast and explains how it has shaped who we are and how we see ourselves.

Moffat spent a year travelling the North Sea coastline to better understand our relationship with it. The story is one of Roman invasions, the arrival of Saxons and Viking raids. It is also a story of the people they met, of Pictish citadels and Orcadia stone circles. More recently, it is a tale of technological advance, of submarine engineering, the boom in oil and the arrival of offshore windfarms. Moffat says the North Sea’s story is one of insistent, inescapable change.

Moffat is a historian, former director of the Edinburgh Festival Fringe and former director of programmes at Scottish television. He is founder of Borders Book festival.
