Historian and bestselling author Hallie Rubenhold talks about her latest book, a panoramic examination of the infamous 1910 murder in London of the American music hall performer, Belle Elmore.
Rubenhold explains how Elmore’s friends in the Music Hall Ladies’ Guild demanded an investigation after Elmore disappeared from her home. The investigation provoked a manhunt for her husband, the medical fraudster Dr Hawley Harvey Crippen. Rubenhold gives voice to the many women who were never properly heard in the case.
Rubenhold is also author of The Five: The Untold Lives of the Women Killed by Jack the Ripper, The Covent Garden Ladies and Lady Worsley’s Whim. The last two inspired BBC television series, Harlots and The Scandalous Lady W. Here she talks to Andrew Wilson author of seven novels, five biographies and one group biography. His latest is I Wanna Be Loved By You: Marilyn Monroe, A Life in 100 Takes.
Part of the festival’s crime fiction programme.
