Bestselling natural historian Charles Foster mixes psychology, science and cultural history to explore the fascinating relationship between humans and pets.

Foster looks back over 10,000 years of animal domestication and asks why we want tame wolves, subdued wild cats and even snakes in our homes. Is it because we too are wild and want some wildness in our lives? Foster looks at the bond between human and pet has evolved over history and explains what evolution tells us about our own changing identity. Do pets help us to communicate, and can they show us who we really are?

Foster is a fellow of Exeter College, Oxford. He is a former vet and a former barrister. He is author of several books including the bestselling Being a Beast, which described his attempts to live life like five animals, a badger, an otter, a fox, a deer and a swift.
