Neuroscientist Dr Joseph Jebelli says long baths, walks in nature, meditation and simple daydreaming are the key to a happier, healthier and more productive life.

Jebelli says latest research in neuroscience is solving mysteries around the brain at rest and it has profound implications for intelligence, creativity and life expectancy. Despite the constant messaging that we must make the most of every moment, research has found that overwork is causing 745,000 deaths a year. Solitude and silence stimulate the growth of new brain cells and can even slow the progress of Alzheimer’s. Jebelli says that when we let our brains rest and wander something magical happens and we are able to think in new ways.

Jebelli is author of two previous books, How the Mind Changed and In Pursuit of Memory, which was shortlisted for the Royal Society Trivedi Science Book Prize and longlisted for the Wellcome Book Prize.
