Former Archbishop of Canterbury the Rt Rev Lord Rowan Williams explains why he finds hope for humankind in the idea of solidarity both as an idea and as a way of acting in the world.
Williams argues that it is only by exploring how we can speak with and work alongside each other that we can unlock the power of solidarity as a model for community and care. He looks at how solidarity has been understood over the years, from its roots in the French Revolution to resistance against Nazis and communism, Polish workers’ rights movements and the Nueva Solidatyridad in Mexico City. Williams says solidarity requires recognition in the deepest sense. It is not only saying others are ‘just like us’ but it is by joining with their claim.
Williams was Archbishop of Canterbury between 2003 and 2012 and is a former master of Magdalene College, Cambridge. He is author of books including Looking East in Winter, Holy Living and The Edge of Words.
