BBC News presenter Reeta Chakrabarti discusses her debut novel Finding Belle, a story of mothers and daughters that stretches from the beaches of Mombasa to the suburbs of England and the streets of Kolkata.

As a young girl, Mivvi finds her mother Belle puzzling. Belle is beautiful but troubled and increasingly disconnected from the world. Belle travelled to England when she married following a whirlwind romance. But, far from family and friends, her love affair began to crumble. As Mivvi grows up, she must reconnect the pieces of her mother’s life and uncover the secrets clouding their past.

Chakrabarti has worked for the BBC at home and abroad for more than 30 years and is currently a chief presenter for BBC news. She has been a judge for the David Cohen Prize for Literature and has chaired the judges for the Costa Book of the Year and the BBC National Short Story Award.
