Mother of seven highly talented and creative children Kadiatu Kanneh-Mason looks at what it means and how it feels to grow up as a Black artist today.

Kanneh-Mason’s children are all accomplished classical musicians. Her third eldest, Sheku, won BBC Young Musician 2016 and performed at the wedding of Prince Harry and Meghan Markle. The Kanneh-Masons have performed together at the Baftas, on Britain’s Got Talent and at major concert halls worldwide. Kanneh-Mason describes her pride at seeing her eldest, Isata, perform at the 2023 BBC Proms. However, her youngest came to her in tears shortly afterwards after seeing online abuse directed at her sister. Kanneh-Mason explains, through conversations with her children, what it’s like to come of age in these turbulent times when Black self-expression is met with such abuse, and she offers a hopeful way through it.

Kanneh-Mason is a writer, lecturer and arts advocate and also author of House of Music: Raising the Kanneh-Masons.
