Musician and art historian Dr Eleanor Chan takes about her radically original history of music that looks at not just how we hear it but also at how we see it.

Chan says music is interwoven in our lives. We all listen to it and some play it. From the earliest traces of human existence we have tried to capture it through instruments we decorate, spaces we perform in, paintings, manuscripts and haute couture. Chan goes on a journey through sound and vision that will change the way we see music.

Chan is a historian of Renaissance art, music and visual culture. Her previous books include Mathematics and the Craft of Thought in the Anglo-Dutch Renaissance and Syrene Soundes: False Relations in the English Renaissance. She is also a published children’s author and a painter.
